The number of seniors in our country will double by 2050, from 57 million to 112 million. By 2050, seniors will make up 26 percent of the population. The “silver tsunami” has already arrived as over 10,000 Baby Boomers reach the age of 65 every single day. Lifespans are increasing and with that, health issues tend to crop up. Living longer means more years spent in the struggles that accompany old age. Add to that the increase in geographic mobility of our families and the result is millions of seniors left behind, hungry and alone.

Meals delivered by Senior Nutrition Programs throughout the country enable seniors to remain independent and stay in their homes and out of nursing facilities. It costs less to provide a senior a meal for an entire year than it costs to spend one day in the hospital or six days in a nursing home.

Great leaders have said the test of any civilization is how it treats those most vulnerable. Senior Nutrition Programs and Meals on Wheels demonstrate our country’s effort to rise up and meet this standard.
